Burton Joins the Women’s March on Washington

“Stand up, stand out” is a mantra we hold close to our hearts.

Thanks to the commitment of our CEO Donna Carpenter, many of us at Burton were able to put it into action at the 2017 Women’s March on Washington. We travelled by plane, train, bus, and carpool with Donna’s help, and met up in D.C. on the morning of the march. We ate breakfast together, collected signs, donned pink hats, and wrote each other’s phone numbers on our arms in case we were separated.

For many of us, activism isn’t new. Ali Kenney, Burton’s Senior Director of Global Supply Chain and Sustainability, joined the People’s Climate March in 2014 and has presented our sustainability efforts at the US Capitol. For years, Burton has worked closely with Protect Our Winters (POW) to take action against global warming. Donna’s first march was the 1989 March for Women’s Lives, shortly after she found out she was pregnant with her oldest child. “We’ve never marched as a company before,” she said, “but it’s in our DNA to resist what isn’t right.”

The march was scheduled from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, and energy was high all day.

“Welcome to your first day, we will not go away” was one of many memorable chants.

During the Women’s March, we made history by standing up and standing out around the globe. We’re so grateful to have been a part of it all. Scroll through the slideshow below for some of our memories, and thanks for being a part of the Burton community. ∆
