Pay to Play: How Burton Employees Earn Their Season’s Passes
Burton’s whole mission is to help people enjoy the outdoors, and how could we do that without getting out there ourselves? We enable our employees to go ride as much as possible by giving each one a season’s pass. It’s a huge perk, but it ain’t free. In order to reap the benefits, every employee must fulfill their Front Line Commitment.
The Front Line Commitment (FLC) is a program for Burton employees to spend time working directly with our community in order to earn their season pass. There are plenty of ways to do it, from shadowing consumer-facing roles, like Rider Service and Retail Stores, to volunteering for after school programs, The CHILL Foundation, or the Special Olympics.
Emmet Manning embodies the spirit of the FLC. He’s been with Burton for 30 years, and engages in more than one FLC option every season.
“I’ll volunteer for the first day of the Summer Sale,” he explains. “It’s great to meet our customers first hand and get back to hooking people up with gear. In my mind, the Sale has always been about giving back a little to our local snowboard community. I’ve also done the after-school snowboard lesson program over at Cochran’s, and several years of volunteering with CHILL. There’s no better thrill than getting a new rider up and connecting turns. Local School Programs are challenged with finding instructors. If a kid wants to try snowboarding, I want to make it a success for them. I make it a goal to introduce 12 new riders to snowboarding every season.”
One common thread in the different Front Line Commitment options: they all put employees on ground level with our community. Burton Guide, Brett Roskey says that when folks shadow the Burton Guides in our Rider Service department, they hear the most common questions asked by our customers and connect with employees that work on the front lines, helping people on a daily basis.
We’ve found ourselves at the heart of a global community, and the FLC is a big part of what’s kept us rooted in it for over 18 years. We work like crazy to make products that help people get after it. Having a little fun for ourselves in the process is all part of job.
